Kennedy's Cleaners Dry Cleaning Guide
Dry cleaning is essential for the proper maintenance of a diverse array of garments. While regular care of your wardrobe is a significant task, understanding the specifics of dry cleaning can maximize the value of your clothing budget. While purchasing clothes might be enjoyable, consider the future maintenance costs to prevent later frustrations. Thus, it's crucial to think about the cleaning needs when you buy clothes.
Fabrics
Advancements in technology have broadened the variety of fabrics, textures, and colors available in both natural and synthetic materials. Manufacturers have enhanced permanent press items, pile fabrics, double knits, and synthetic furs to make them more durable, easier to clean, and less problematic for dry cleaners. Nonetheless, understanding fabric serviceability is vital.
Color
Assessing the color stability of fabric by sight alone is unreliable. Always read care labels thoroughly and adhere to the specified cleaning guidelines. If you handle a garment carefully and it still fades, consider lodging a complaint with the retailer.
Luxurious Fabrics
Many high-end fabrics, such as cashmere, camel hair, and lightweight, loosely woven wools, do not have high durability and should only be purchased with full awareness of their care needs. These fabrics are prone to snagging and sagging.
Care Labels
Care labels are meant to remain on your garments permanently. Do not remove them as they provide valuable information for both you and your dry cleaner. They list fiber content and care instructions, indicating the most suitable cleaning method. Sometimes, garments that are both washable and dry-cleanable only show washing instructions, even though dry cleaning is also an option.
Fading
Fading can occur when fabrics are exposed to sunlight or artificial light, with the color loss being gradual and often unnoticed until after the garment is cleaned. Dyes on silks, acetates, leathers, and suedes are particularly vulnerable to color loss or discoloration, a process known as fume fading when it occurs in closets or on store racks.
Speaking with Your Dry Cleaner
When you bring your garments to Kennedy's Cleaners, please inform our staff of any stains, particularly those from sugary beverages which may not be apparent until cleaning. Understanding the source of a stain can streamline the stain removal process. Remember, the longer a stain remains on a garment, the more challenging it is to remove it.

Suede & Leather
Suede and leather require specialized processing to maintain their finish, feel, and color. Suede is particularly sensitive to fading, spotting, and uneven coloring, and should only be handled by dry cleaners who are equipped to manage these delicate materials.
Imitation Leather
Imitation leather, particularly those made from vinyl, should never be dry-cleaned due to risks of cracking or peeling. However, high-quality polyurethane-based imitation suede is suitable for dry cleaning. Flocked imitation suede, created by attaching loose fibers to a base fabric with adhesive, may wear off or be removed during normal wear or cleaning, resulting in bald spots. Imitation leather and suede, although much improved, remain complex materials. Kennedy's Cleaners will accept them for cleaning, but at the owner's risk.
